The Indoor Climate

Objects that we own often consist of a combination of different materials and different constructions. For example, a wooden cabinet can consist of different types of wood, with metal decorations. Now, the interaction of the indoor climate on these types of objects can therefore differ per component. Although the perfect indoor climate does not exist, a climate study can determine what the most suitable climate is for your situation.

An incorrect indoor climate accelerates aging processes:

  • Biological degradation:

    • when the relative humidity is too high for a long period of time, mold spores can germinate and grow into mold that damages your object.

  • Chemical degradation:

    • at high temperatures, chemical reactions are accelerated; connections can break, think of the embrittlement of paper.

  • Mechanical degradation:

    • organic materials can expand and contract due to fluctuations in relative humidity. When these processes take place successively or the environment is too humid or too dry for a long time, various damages can occur; wooden objects can crack or break.

What can you expect from us?

Measuring an indoor climate is necessary to be able to make a statement about the effect of the current climate on your heritage objects. A climate study consists of strategically placing data loggers, guided by the features and properties of the building construction you live in. Data loggers are small measuring instruments that measure temperature and relative humidity without being noticed. Based on the measurement results, a climate report is written per season in which the indoor climate is plainly visualized for you. We do this with the help of graphs, a written and an oral explanation.

Very valuable heritage

In order to be able to make a more precise and definitive statement about an indoor climate, it is necessary to measure for at least one year. Each season has a different effect on the creation of an indoor climate; the changing outdoor climate and the building properties of your home influence the indoor climate. This lengthy investigation is necessary if even subtle changes in your objects are  harmful. You are considering this extensive investigation based on the very high value of the objects you want to protect from decay. You can expect a comprehensive report from us every three months.

The advice is always tailor-made

Whichever climate research you choose, per season or per year, our advice is always tailor-made. Appropriate climate advice naturally depends on the numerous and different factors of your personal situation. First of all, the value and context of both the collection and the building in which it is located are taken into account. The object and building needs are determined and the use of a space is taken into account. We realize that you do not live in a museum and we are looking for a balance between your living comfort and the conservation of your heritage objects.
